Lady Gaga needs a hit. If you’re only as good as your last album, she is a fallen star – Artpop, from 2013, was a resounding Artflop. 

Luckily for all of us, you’re not only as good as your last anything, you’re as good as the sum of your gifts, which, in Gaga’s case, remain formidable.

Her answer to her wobble is to go back to basics – not her own early triumphs, which lay in pop-rock bangers, but the four foundation stones of the music itself: folk, blues, country and gospel.
