DOWN THE STRETCH

• Trainer Jerry Hollendorfer said Thursday that two-time champion Songbird will make her 4-year-old debut in the $750,000 Grade I Ogden Phipps at Belmont Park on June 10 rather than the $400,000 Grade I Beholder Mile at Santa Anita on June 3. Songbird, who’s lost only once in 12 starts, worked six furlongs Thursday at Santa Anita in 1:13.80. “She surely will (go in the Phipps),” Hollendorfer told Santa Anita publicity. “The boss (owner Rick Porter) wanted to run there.”

• Classic Empire, runner-up in the Preakness Stakes after a fourth-place finish in the Kentucky Derby, will begin preparations for the June 10 Belmont Stakes by jogging over the Churchill Downs main track Friday morning. “We are really proud of his Preakness effort,” assistant trainer Norman Casse said. “He came out of the race in great shape and we’re excited to get him back to training.” Early indications are that the Belmont will draw a field of 8-10 horses for the final leg of the Triple Crown.
