Southampton manager Claude Puel has risked the wrath of defender Jose Fonte by suggesting he will leave him out of their crunch Europa League qualification with Hapoel Be’er Sheva on Thursday night.
Fonte spoke out earlier this week to explain his frustration at not playing in Europe. He also complained about only being offered a pay rise and not a contract extension after winning Euro 2016 with Portugal in the summer.
It is believed the club offered to make him their highest-paid player on £80,000-per-week but due to his age — he turns 33 this month — they were not willing to increase the length beyond June 2018 when his existing deal ends.
