While buying interest has remained relatively subdued, stocks have moved mostly higher over the course of the trading day on Wednesday. With the upward move, the Dow and the S&P 500 have reached new record intraday highs.
Currently, the major averages are posting modest gains. The Dow is up 64.35 points or 0.3 percent at 19,316.13, the Nasdaq is up 4.22 points or 0.1 percent at 5,337.22 and the S&P 500 is up 5.53 points or 0.3 percent at 2,217.76.
Traders may be reluctant to make more significant moves ahead of the European Central Bank’s monetary policy announcement on Thursday.
The ECB is expected to extend its asset purchase program amid the recent political turmoil in Europe following the referendum in Italy.
A relatively quiet day on the U.S. economic front may also be keeping some traders on the sidelines ahead of next week’s Federal Reserve meeting.
